East West Rail: Bletchley, Marston Vale and Great Brickhill
Why a major regional railway project matters to a village with no proposed station of its own
Current context checked: 4 October 2026
East West Rail is reshaping the railway network around Bletchley and the Marston Vale Line. Great Brickhill is not on the proposed route and has no proposed station, but the project matters because Bletchley and the railway corridor to Bedford have long formed part of the village’s wider transport geography.
The Great Brickhill connection is through Bletchley
Great Brickhill’s railway story has always been one of connection rather than direct service. In the nineteenth century the village looked towards Bletchley station and the surrounding railway towns for travel, post and employment. East West Rail gives that long-standing regional relationship a new chapter.
The most relevant part of the modern project is the existing Marston Vale Line between Bletchley and Bedford. East West Rail is carrying out preparatory works on that corridor and is proposing wider upgrades, new stations and changes to Bletchley station as part of the full scheme.
What is already happening
A Marston Vale Acceleration Programme is under way on the existing railway between Bletchley and Bedford. East West Rail describes this as preparatory work authorised under the 2020 Transport and Works Act Order. It includes bridge, level-crossing and other infrastructure work intended to prepare the line for future service improvements.
The wider project remains subject to further consents. East West Rail’s 2026 route-wide consultation closed on 9 June after considering updated designs across the Oxford–Cambridge route. The company says it intends to submit a Development Consent Order application in 2027.
Bletchley station and the Marston Vale proposals
For Bletchley, the 2026 proposals include station capacity improvements and a new eastern entrance. The eastern entrance is intended to improve access between the station, the town centre and surrounding communities.
Along the Marston Vale Line, East West Rail has selected a consolidated-stations approach. The current proposals would replace the existing smaller stations with four new, accessible stations at Woburn Sands, Ridgmont, Lidlington and Stewartby, together with changes farther east at Bedford St Johns. Fenny Stratford and Bow Brickhill are among the stations proposed for closure.
These are important local proposals, but they should not be confused with completed changes. The station closures, replacement stations and full future service pattern remain part of the developing East West Rail scheme and are subject to the necessary approvals.
What this means for Great Brickhill — and what it does not
For Great Brickhill, the significance lies in access to a changing regional network. Bletchley is already a nearby rail centre with a documented historical relationship to the village, while Fenny Stratford, Bow Brickhill and Woburn Sands are part of the surrounding transport landscape.
It would be wrong, however, to claim that East West Rail runs through Great Brickhill, that the village is receiving a station, or that specific effects on commuting, traffic, housebuilding or employment have already been demonstrated. Those questions require separate local evidence. The transport story can be told clearly without overstating the direct impact.
A project still changing
East West Rail is a current infrastructure story, so this account needs to remain date-stamped. Consultation responses are being considered, preparatory works are continuing and the formal planning process is not complete. Future decisions may alter details of stations, crossings, access and delivery dates.
For GBHP, the value of recording the project now is to place today’s changes beside the older railway story: Great Brickhill again sits just beyond a major transport corridor whose principal stations and engineering works lie outside the parish but whose regional connections may shape how the village relates to neighbouring towns.
