1877 St Mary’s Church Organ

The St Mary’s Church organ was installed in 1877 (see below). There is a Parish Magazine article from 1893 and there are more recent updates from the 2020s.

Extract from the Parish Magazine, October 1893.

BRICKHILL (GREAT)

The organ in the church has been for some little time in the hands of its builders, Messrs. Hill and Son, who are carrying out the improvements and alterations. A new coupler swell to the choir is being added and a very soft stop, the Dulciana, is being placed on the choir. The organ has been taken to pieces and thoroughly cleaned. It was found that the damp of the church in former years had done considerable damage and that the organ was in a very dirty state.

As a record for the Parish it will be interesting to give the history of the organ. It was erected in the church by Messrs. Hill and Son, in the year 1877, through the liberality of the late Lady Pauncefort Duncombe. Mrs Wingfield of Ampthill, in memory of the late Rector, the Rev. Sir H. Foulis, Bart., also gave a handsome donation, while the present Rector added the choir organ. The open diapason on the great organ was …….. an exact reproduction of the one ……… recently added to the organ in Westminster Abbey, while the clarionet on the choir was copied from that in the organ of King’s College, Cambridge.

The organ was opened in September 1877 by W. Amps Esq., M.A. the then organist of Kings College, Cambridge. Since that date some additions were made by the late Lady Duncombe, they consisted of first of all a Vox Humana stop, which was made by the celebrated firm of Cavaillèe Coll of Paris, perhaps the first organ builder in the world. Those who have visited Paris, may have heard his organ in the Madeleine … the Parish must be proud to possess an organ at once so noble in its tone and also such a help to the devotion of the worshippers. The great organ is a good specimen of organ building, and may vie with many a cathedral great organ. It will be also interesting to add that the Vox Humana was copied by Messrs. Hill and Son for the largest organ in the world which they recently built for Sydney in Australia
