Search and Research

Start with the clue you have

A name, address, approximate date or remembered event can be enough to begin. Choose one starting point below, then follow the photographs, places and stories it reveals.

Choose a starting point

A person or family

Use the controlled family archive for names and family connections. This material retains its member access settings.

A house or place

Begin with the local places index for buildings, churches, schools, shops and other village locations.

A photograph

Browse the image collections. For a selection around a subject or keyword, use My Slideshow from the Members Hub.

A date or event

Follow the History Time Line to place a remembered occasion or change within the village story.

Village life in the news

Look for reports of clubs, organisations, meetings, celebrations and the everyday life of Great Brickhill.

An article or book

Use authored accounts and focused collections when you want a fuller narrative around your subject.

Make the search easier

Try a surname before a full name. Consider initials, nicknames and different spellings. If a date is uncertain, begin with a decade or omit it. A building’s old name, an occupation or a nearby landmark may be more useful than its modern address.

Follow the connections

A photograph may identify a place; the place may reveal a resident; the resident may lead to an event or article. Compare captions and accounts, and keep personal recollection distinct from documentary evidence.

If nothing appears

An unsuccessful search does not establish that a person or event is absent from the collection. Try a simpler question or another starting point. If you have a clue we have missed, send it with the page or photograph reference.

Help us understand our visitors

Three quick questions about your visit.

This anonymous survey helps us understand who uses the Heritage Project and whether visitors find what they are looking for. We do not ask for your name, email address or contact details. If you choose No, you may optionally tell us why in up to 180 characters; please do not include names, email addresses, telephone numbers or other personal/contact information. Any such reason is retained for no more than 13 months.
